The Monster in Man
I was scrolling through my movie collection and stumbled on an early favorite called Apt Pupil, it is a movie based on the novella from Stephen King about a boy who comes across a neighbor who just happens to be a former Nazi on the run. What then ensues is a game of blackmail and mind games that each plays on eachother in order to get what they want i.e. to remain in hiding and the other to extract information on the goings on of the concentration camps and stories about WW2 that the teachers in school dont want to tell us about. I found this film to really be facinating in its interpretaion of what we as people, are capable of and how we handle certain details that to most , would better be left forgotten. One scene in particular is perhaps one of the greatest examples of terror in what one man can do to an entire generation of soldiers when once again, is brought to the forefront in a cruel display of obedience forced on the neighbor by the boy and then strangley embraced by the former Nazi who is starting to feel the power he once had. Ian Mckellan is absoultley brillant as the Nazi in hiding and was certainly overlooked at Oscar time when this film came out . Have a look and tell me what u think.
