Big city blues

I was recently in Chicago over the weekend and though it wasn't my first time there, it was the first time I realized how shity the "big city" I live close to is. Every major city in the world has its slums im sure but what makes my "big city" unique is it's once proud stature as a big time influence in the industrializing of our country and one of my "favorite" things to pick on about my "big city" is that by its citizens actions they wouldn't give two rats asses to do anything about its rapidly declining infrastructure. Less than 20% of its registered voters partake in its voting process, its the number one murder capitol in the U.S. , big business refuses, behind closed doors, to place their companies in the city due to its crime rate, the big 3 have all but dissapeared from the downtown area. There has never been a subway system downtown because the"big city" wanted you to buy their cars to drive into town, not take a ride. All the industry that lined the entrance into the downtown area are now rotting away. Unless you work in one of the 3 casinos or are bartender/ waiter there is no reason for you to be down there at all ....oh wait, there's the football team.....no ...they've sucked since 53' ...there's baseball ...their old stadium is a huge black hole in the city...there's hockeytown....name one player that lives in the city....basketball....who gives a crap, the refs fix the games anyway. The point im making here with the sports teams is that most of the people that go see them dont live in the city or have no connection with it at all, most of their parents moved out of the city 40 years ago plus I've never heard of a city that rebuilt itself on one good season of a franchise so dont give me any crap on that one. Its the people that can make a reputation of a great city and those people of this "big city" have been gone for half a century. If your poor or not well off there is still no reason to have your yard look like a nuclear waste dump, take some pride in yourself for fucks sake!! If you've never been to Cleveland I suggests you go there, its a perfect example of what an historic city that's had its share of shitty times and its populace pulled themselves out of the mud and into a fun and prosperous city. DETROIT !!!!!! I hope you are listening.

I call it suburbanification and it has been going on since the 80's. People started moving out to the "country" and soon entire new suburbs developed around cities all over the country. Then industry wanted to be out where the people were. Then the people moved our futher and so on until there are these concentric rings around all these cities. Only the biggest of the big like Chicago and New York City have bucked the trend because they made if fashionable to live downtown. I never heard anyone think it was fashionable to live in downtown Detroit unless they were nicknamed Slim Shady.
